I got a call from Joey on Thursday and he wanted to know if I would go to mingo on Saturday, if he bought a kayak. I did the only right thing to do of course! I will say before I get into the report that he did the right thing. He did not go cheap and treated himself with a badass kayak, the Ocean Kayak Trident 13. It is a beautiful machine to say the least.
Anyway we start the morning surrounded by mullet and baitfish. Joey notices a tarpon just ahead of him. 2 twitches of the spook and about a 80# tarpon goes airborne after it, just feet from his kayak. I doubt I'll ever forget the mental picture I have. The tarpon missed the lure but our hearts were pumping fast. Thumbs up from Joey.
Shortly after I ran over and spooked a big snook. This would happen 3 more times the same day. The kayaks are so silent that the fish will not move until you are on top of them. I had 3 spook and 2 miss on my soft plastic. Joey got a little more luck and landed a hefty 32-33" but I was too far for a pic.
Then we stood and started poling the flats. Redfish, redfish, and more redfish! Joey had the first hook up!
I followed with a rat of my own.
This would happen over and over for the next 2-3 hours.
and some doubles that we had.
We missed a few big reds that were mixed in, but we had a great time and covered several miles. Definitely the most for me ever in one day. Next time I will make a full day out of it to cover more ground. I can say it was spectacular to stand, pole, and fish in areas that boats cannot get into. No fancy smashncy boat necessary!
HA kayak guru extraordinaire.
