I am by no means a professional fisher but I do enjoy relaxing with my family and catching a few fish. We have a small boat that we use to fish on the lake behind our house. Recently we went out and did some saltwater shore fishing and we had a really good time. The friends we went with caught a black tip shark. My brother was using a pin fish to bait out something bigger and he got a snag but it broke his line. We later had another pin fish missing the entire back side that had been a clean bite off. We think that the shark that was caught had been the culprit.
I would really like to get a good rod and reel so that I could do some basic saltwater shore fishing as well as some pier fishing and freshwater fishing. I also don't want to spend a ton of money but was wondering what I should be looking for in a rod and reel as well as what kind of line we should be using.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated or maybe another website where I could do some reading to get some information on this topic.
Where are you located and what species are available to target in your area
There really is no such thing as a basic setup. There simply are too many types of fish and fishing for 1 size fit's all.
That said for most folks a med wieght spinning outfit is a good place to start.
First off, welcome to the site. I will follow up on Jack Hexter's question of where are you located with what is your budget for said rod and reel? Budget will have everything to due with the types of recommendations that will best suit you.
