Went out two days in a row last week; Friday morning and Saturday afternoon looking for dolphin. Started out friday looking for bait and had an unusually hard time getting some. We ended up buying enough for the day and headed offshore at about 8:30. We headed straight east past the can and didn't start fishing until we got to about 1000 ft. We immediately saw birds working but turned out to be little bonita. We continued offshore and encountered 2 more good looking schools of birds that only held bonita under them. We were frustrated now and continued offshore to about 2200 feet and found a nice current holding tons of debris and birds. We found an empty refrigerator holding tons of bait and there were no dolphin to be seen after fishing the area for about 20 minutes. Began to head back in to shallower water around 11:00 am and came across one bird diving on a patch of weed. At this point we were going to fish anything so we stopped and found a small 15 pounder that was very unaggressive. We got it to eat and put it in the boat. That was the only fish we saw there. We continued west and found another weedline in shallower water, holding a large wooden plank. Again tons of bait and birds and no dolphin. We worked it for about 20 minutes finally getting 2 more schoolies and losing 2 more that spit the hook and swam deep. One of the more frustrating days I've had in years.
The next day, Saturday afternoon we ran from ocean reef north to miami and found a large weedline in 1300 feet holding tons of bait but no dolphin. Came home empty handed after 2 hours of fishing a huge weedline with no other boats and no dolphin. Head in to the edge near the can to dump the wells and after 10 minutes of sitting we saw a sail free-jumping strait towards the boat. Basically hit it in the head with a pilchard and it just kept jumping and wouldnt eat. Any ways its been a frustrating weekend. Maybe some other boats had some better luck.
