THEY ARE BACK!!....It has been a while since a Grander was caught here. There have been reports these past couple of years of giant marlin on the line who eventually got away. But now, its all coming back to us.
During the Salinas Yacht Club Tournament which took place this weekend, several boats went out. There were several boats that hooked Blues and Stripes during the day but the best one was yet to come. Excellent conditions for feeding and water a bit cold at 72 F were signs that a Big One could be expected.
Fate would have it that our good friend Jorge Pancho Jurado on board the Amalita, who had the Blue Marlin record in Ecuador of 1.014 lbs in Manta in 1984, caught a Blue Marlin that weighted 1.102 lbs and set a new Pacific World Record on an 80 pound line. Just 15 miles west of Salinas, at the Las Hierbas bank, Jorge got in the record books again.
Needless to say, everyone was excited and there must have been hundreds of photographs taken all afternoon at the Yacht Club. Congratulations to our friend Jorge and his crew for such an accomplishment.
Just as we expected, the cold water brought the bigger marlin to our shores. Hopefully this will bring excellent fishing to Salinas until March.
