    Default Thank you Mr. Olander

Just wanted to publically thank you Mr. Olander. This morning I arrived at my office to find the latest issue of Sport Fishing magazine. The second to last sentence in your editorial was especially pleasing to me in which you stated " . . . I've come to the point where it makes me uncomfortable to be on the same side of any issues with Pew." That statement brings comfort in these troubled times. It's imperative that all anglers understand that the Pew organizations wants nothing less than the complete abolition of all fishing, PERIOD.

I understand where you are coming from on the Shark Free Marina's initiative and commend you for your stance that sharks should NEVER be killed simply to be strung up at the dock for glory shots. That being said, I cannot agree to support the Shark Free Marina's program because no marina should have the right to tell me that that I cannot pull back into my slip at the end of a successful day with a legally caught 200lb Mako on ice. I have released all but 2 of the mako's I caught in my lifetime. They are truly amazing creatures and I fondly remember each and every encounter I have with them. If I choose to ice one (legally) out of 20 of them for the grill, NO marina should tell me I'm not welcome. I have caught well over 100 blacktip sharks over the years and have never killed one of them BUT if next week I chose to ice one (legally) for a weekend bar-b-que, I should not be made to feel guilty or unwelcome . That is flat out wrong.

Thanks again on the Pew position though

i hear you on that, jeff! fortunately, there is another classification, now -- besides Shark Free Marinas, a facility may elect to be a Shark Friendly Marina, basically discouraging but not prohibiting the killing of sharks.clearly, since i also maintain that there's nothing wrong with keeping a shark (of modest size) for the boat, a crew should face no issues cleaning it at the dock, imho. -- doug

Perspective Tranformation is a good thing. Pew sounded good at first but there is no denying their adgenda in regards to fishing. Killing fish or animals for food seems reasonable but killing them just to get a photo next to them is just not right.
