Alabama Gulf Coast Light Tackle Report Saturday 4.21.12

Before we were in the grips of this powerful cold front we managed to sneek in a trip Saturday morning. On a guides day off Capt. Clif Jones and I (Capt. Rick Haag) did a little scouting along the shores of Mobile Bay. Proceding the front, the sky was solid grey and little drizzly which kept most folks off the water, but that wasn't going to stop us. We launched on an obscure boat ramp on the Bon Secour river and worked a few areas inside with no luck before heading out to Mobile Bay. We had a couple hours of flood tide left before it went slack at around noon so we did not go too far. Pelicans were working schools of menhaden in about 4-5 feet of water so we followed their lead and fished from 4 feet all the way back into 2 feet. It did not take long before we started scoring on 3-4lb speckled trout, all on top water baits and flies. After just a couple hours we had caught or saw at least a dozen 3lb+ specks.
My point is that even on days that you may otherwise write off if you can locate a calm shoreline with good tidal movement and the correct bottom structure and or food supply you can pull out a decent morning if you go when most others stay home.
