Los Suenos Costa Rica, report May 6-12, 2012

We have been experiencing some great offshore fishing over the past few weeks.
Honestly the sailfish bite through April and early May has been some of the best all year, even though official high season is over and we are now in off season ( green season).
It has been quite easy to go out and get 20 + sailfish bites day with a few marlin mixed in here and there.
As we are now moving into Green season, the occasional rains have started to push a good amount of wood- logs, braches and trees, along with other debris out in the ocean, providing plenty of opportunity to do other types of fishing than just troll.

A good piece of floating structure, whether it is a tree, a tangled mess of old nets and longline gear, or a bunch of branches and trash pushed together on a current line, is often loaded with smaller game fish, Mahi Mahi, small tunas, Jacks, tripletails and occasional wahoos,.
This is a great time to break out some spinning gear with jigs and poppers, and have some light tackle fun, and perfect chance to use a small live tuna for livebait for a marlin.
Green season also corresponds with our peak season for yellowfin tunas here. While they sporadically make appearances during High season December-April
They begin to consistently show in May, and are thick by June and stay around in very good numbers through November. June July august and September is a great time to come and target some big ones here, most will average 60-100lbs, but over 100 is very common, and up to 300 is very possible.
We are just starting to see the first schools of yellowfins showing up in the past couple weeks.

5/ 7 2012 we fished offshore with the Gwaltney family from Florida.
We trolled around catching 2 sailfish on the troll for 4 bites. (the bite slowed for a few days after the Supermoon full moon on may 5) , and found a few nice pieces of debris floating. We spent some time catching a bunch of small yellowfins, and all the Mahi you could want, up to about 15-20lbs, and trying to catch a marlin live baiting but no takers today, we did find a pod of spinner dolphins with some of the first Yellowfins of the season, not real big, but 20-50lbs so decent eating sized. We caught 2 on runners, and 3 on poppers, pulled a few others off.
The tunas were eating balled up, tiny 1” red minnow, so they were not too interested in our poppers or live baits which were much bigger than what they had been feeding on, cool sight nonetheless.
For about 30 minutes we were right in the middle of a bunch or them busting on the minnows-(see video)

5/8 we did a inshore trip with the Hiltabidal’s . ran down the beach looking for sardines, but the swell had the water too churned up so headed to some rocks offshore. Pulled up one nice Cubera and some Jacks in the morning,, ran offshore and caught 6 groupers for their dinner, worked are way back in and caught one nice rooster, lost another one on the leader, and had several more bites, and caught a bunch of small stuff

5/9 we fished offshore with the Gwaltney family again, still some stuff floating, lots of small tunas and dorados, 2 nice tripletails off a log, and 4 for 7 on sailfish trolling. Found some spinners again, but never saw any tunas on them

5/11 we took a group of guys from Miami out for Stay In Costa Rica. The first spot we caught one nice Cubera snapper on live bait, pulled another nice fish off, and one of the guests caught a nice broomtail gouper while working the diamond jig.
Moved out to the 26 rock, we did have a wahoo on for few minutes ( the hoo’s just started showing up too) while trolling for bonitos, caught a sail and a few bonitos, then switch to livebaiting for a while, catching another Cubera, and a mullet snappers. Move back inshore and tried for a roosterfish for about an hour, but just caught a few houndfish and jacks.it was a short day, they had to be back to the dock by 3.

5/12 fished our 3rd day offshore with the gwaltney family, and the sail bite had definitely picked up again. We caught 10 for about 18 bites, including 3 doubleheaders. we hooked about 16 but jumped a few off.
We raised about 22 total- 5 doubles and 1 triple and several singles, great action on the water today!
