paddled out solo yesterday to the Bob Hall Standpipe, i watched the storm from the beach for almost an hour and finally decided to do it..the paddle out was flat and calm with kings and birds working bait everywhere..kinda a magic hour it was amazing..had 4 king runs hooked 2 for a few minutes ended up loosing all of them..its okay was gonna try to release them anyway..one hit so hard it broke one of my flush mount rod holders..was just paddling up on the birds trolling ribbon fish and i would hook up..
landed a huge spanish mackerel bled it and put it in the fish bag..it was hard but i tied to the rig, i put out a flatlined ribbonfish and worked on fishing bottom..my first drop i had about half a ribbonfish on it got picked up big time, it kept going i got the hook back..pretty sure it was a ling.. was using 40pound mono mainline on a Fin Nor Sportfisher 80 with a 80pound mono leader with a 4/0 lazer sharp Kahle hook..
next drop got me a big ladyfish which became bait..third drop now with a ladyfish chunk got me the biggest bluefish i have caught in Texas..bled it and put it in the fishbag..put on another ladyfish chunk and dropped it almost to bottom..was wondering why i hadn't hooked a king on the ribbonfish yet when i get a monster run..i unclipped from the rig and gave chase..we were going down current fast..was almost positive i had hooked a monster ling it was giving me a big fight (i fought a 100+pound ling on 50pound mono for 3 hours when i was young and lost it to a different rig than where i hooked it felt the same as this fight) it shook its head a few times and i was convinced i had the ling of a lifetime..
was putting huge pressure on it to keep from going to far away from the rig, in less then 10minutes i saw it..kinda freaked was like "there is no way i can land that ling"(didn't even bring a gaff)..then i realized it wasn't a ling it was shark and a big un..again this was on 80pound mono leader and a 4/0 Kahle hook..ended up being a 7foot bullshark somewhere in the 300-400pound range caught it on the same rod and line i caught the other monster Bull Shark on earlier in the year..cut it loose and headed it against a really strong current and pretty big seas..saw a king landed on bob hall as i was trolling a ribbonfish in search of my tarpon..and surfed a big wave on the way in..all in all it was a awesome day cant wait to get back out there..
