“And the days dwindle down to a precious few”. It’s still October, but based on the number of boats fishing, it seems like the end is near. My boats owner has gone back to Florida so I haven’t been fishing, just putzing around on the boat before putting it away for the winter. Instead I have been taking little road trips up and around the Lighthouse to see what it looks like on the water. There are very few boats out fishing even on the weekends and it looks like the only ones that are are the charterboats. Weekdays even the charterboats are not getting out.
The last couple of weekends fishing was tough on Saturday and most blamed it on the number of boats all trying to catch the same stripers. That wasn’t a problem this Saturday. Instead the slow fishing was blamed on the fog and big heave. Sunday was better, but still not what it should be for this time of year. So, if you are thinking of making a trip, maybe you should plan on a Sunday instead of Saturday like everyone else.
I did get a little bit of encouragement from Capt Fritz Hubner today who told me that the bass season is always over after there is a run of small fish, and there was shot of them this past week. I’ve known Fritz for forty years, and he has always been wrong. Hopefully he is this year as well, because I still have ninety commercial bass tags to use.
There are still plenty of bluefish around and some gannets just started to show up, but Fritz probably didn’t know that.
Some anglers are starting to show some interest in the black fishing and from what I hear it’s looking pretty good, at least over at Fishers Island.
