As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 1/13/13 to 1/19/13
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: The water has really cooled with some areas according to Terra Fin going down to 69 and 70 degrees in some places. The water has been green also in some areas with temperatures going from 69 to 74 through out the fishing grounds. We really monitor Terra Fin is this has really helped us to determine where to fish and where not to fish. It has been a valuable tool.
WEATHER: The weather has been pretty cool for Cabo over the last week. Really the weather warmed up yesterday and today its nice.Really been cool at night and even in the day time. Had to put on a sweater over last week.
BILLFISHING: The Striped Marlin fishing action continues this past week . We did have some pretty good luck this week with our boats landing and releasing quite a few Marlin. Most of the Marlin were 90 to 130 pounds. I am not going to say the fishing is like it was but I can tell you we have been catching Marlin just not in the numbers we were seeing a couple weeks ago. I really havenít heard of any Blue or Black Marlin being caught or hooked this past week. I think water has gotton way to cold for any of those guys to still be in the area. The Marlin we did land were caught 2 to 5 miles off the beach straight out from the Light House. Anyway if you are planning on coming to Cabo this is the place to come if you want to catch your first Marlin. You have a better chance here than any where in the world.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollares a piece and there has been plenty around. DORADO: The Dorado season is pretty much coming to its end but we are still landing some this past week. It still has been pretty consistant with some Dorado going to 30 pounds. With the water getting much cooler if we are still seeing them in numbers that we have been that is a good thing. Most of what we caught was caught on the Pacific side up toward the Pump House and all the way to the Golden Gate. I have also heard of some schools of Dorado around Gordo Banks and at the mouth of the new marina in San Jose Del Cabo.
TUNA: Well we have have some luck this week with the Tuna. Following the Porpoise has helped in producing some nice fish. The Tuna fishing has been good 9 miles off the Light House and up to the Golden Gate. Were using some live bait for the bigger Tuna and some are being taken with just blind strikes and spreader bars and cedar plugs. So most of what we have landed was in the 15 to 30 pound range with a few going to 50 pounds.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has been really good with lots of Sierra being caught in front of the Solmar. Well its that time of year for the Sierra and if you havenít had Sierra in fish soup or made into ceviche you havenít experienced Sierra then. Really an excellent fish for eating. Most are from 3 pounds to 10 pounds and when you catch one you will know it. Th fish are being caught on small Rapalas and Hootchies. Great fighters and game fish. Reports of a few Yellow Tail off of Solmar and the rocks on the pacific. They were caught with Rapalas and Jigging Iron.
WAHOO: I havenít heard of any Wahoo being caught this past week.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and donít even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They donít even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and donít care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who donít have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon. http://www.jcsportfishing.com http://youtu.be/0fc-mnQwBHY
