I would like to do some saltwater fishing and was hoping I could be pointed in the right direction as to which rods and reels I should buy. I have done a bit of freshwater pan fishing but never have fished in saltwater. I am looking to fish from the shore, and would like to cast a line and sit back without having to reel the line in often. Also, is there a book anyone would recommend for novices? I appreciate it.
What type of shore are you referring to and what is your budget for this outfit?
There is a lot of specialty equipment now so I can see it being confusing. The fact that you want to cast would suggest getting a casting reel. The size will depend on what you're fishing for (size) and how much line you will need. Fishing is fishing whether in salt or fresh water. Rods and reels are similar in their construction. The ocean tends to have bigger fish so your equipment and tackle will need to be bigger and stronger. When buying any equipment you have to know facts about access to the water, the depth you're fishing, how large are the fish you're after. Using this information you pin point what you need.
I was a charter captain fishing off Guam in the Marianas for 40 years. If you'd like to talk fishing for big fish check out my blog. http://www.adventure-ocean.com/blog.html
