This report is from mid July 2013.
Manzanillo,MX- July always has been very good season for Blue Marlin in Manzanillo, a lot of bait and blue water 1 mile offshore. Back on July 2010 I broke my personal record in Blue Marlin (4-4) 300+ lbs each one in two days. So we decided to go fishing, I checked all the conditions and it was so positive, low winds, blue water, very good temperature 80-85 F, nice currents near from "El Corral Bank" (this bank it's very famous in Manzanillo) starts 19 NM offshore thru the 180 South.
We filled up the tanks of diesel, beer on ice, some country music, we changed all the flurocarbon leaders, new hooks, I was ready to use my new handmade rasta lures.
Early morning we start running we stop in the 10 NM line of blue water, we set up a nice spread of rasta lures, 7.5-8.5 knts, these lures really work very nice. When we reached the 15 NM on the short corner was a blue marlin behind this lure, finally the marlin decided to get the lure.. "Forward, Forward, Forward!" Fast, Fast!!! When the marlin started to jump and shake the head we saw how the lure came off. Hook off!!!
My friend Capt. "El chino" was running thru el "Caņon Bank" it's 32 NM offshore but he saw all the action of the marlin and he asked by radio what was it: It was a marlin right? I answered Yeahhh!!! So he decided to start in that zone with some lures and dead bait. When we were arriving to "El Corral bank" El chino told us we are working a marlin. After 5 minutes we hear that We saw this big marlin behind the same lure PUM!!! ZZZZZZZ it's a nice marlin maybe a 420 pounder jumping and jumping. After 5 minutes more same sad story Hook off.....
I was so angry, after 30 minutes without other strike I saw a dead tree on the ocean with a lot of live: Bonitos, small dorados, small tunas. My capt. idea was to put some live bonitos to try it for marlin but there were a lot of sharks of the bonitos. It's was a hard decision but I prefer to record the sharks eating bonitos and quit marlin fishing. I took very nice underwater footage we where chumming bonitos there were a lot of sharks. When I finally end to record the sharks our friend el chino was fighting another marlin maybe a 400 pounder. I end the day very happy because I had a chance to record all the underwater show. We don't have marlin that day. Our result was 0-2 blue marlin, some tunas, some dorados and 2 sharks by accident.
El chino ended the day 2-4 on blue Marlin.
The bite was so hot that day!!!!
